Origin of Name
There have been many versions of the name for a long time. Ford Mustang, as we know it today, was developed in 1962 and 1963 with alternative names including Cougar, Torino, Allegro, Avventura and Thunderbird II.
If some of these names sound familiar, it's because, years after the launch of Ford Mustang, they have been used in other models, and now most of them have retired from the stage and become an unforgettable history. Mustang, as the name of the first muscle car at that time, was determined at the end of 1963.
John Najar, then Mustang designer, was a fan of the U.S. Army P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft and recommended the name Mustang for the sports car. But his boss, Bob, thought the name was a little too "airborne" and shelved the idea. Again, the name Mustang is associated with the Pentium Mustang, which seems more romantic and symbolizes an unprecedented pioneering spirit. Eventually Mustang became the official name of the classic sports car.
